BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.64 percent to 4,138.76 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.37 percent lower at 14,169.4 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 3.65 trillion yuan (about 520.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from 3.6 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to medical services and precious metals led the gains, while those in the military equipment and commercial spaceflight sectors suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.96 percent to close at 3,321.89 points.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 2.66 percent lower at 1,806.02 points. ■
